How to read your result
Cost per servingdivides your whole batch cost — every ingredient, plus labour and packaging — across the number of servings the recipe makes. That's the real cost of one cupcake, one loaf slice or one cake portion, not just its share of flour and sugar.
The recommended selling price applies your target margin or markup to that true cost, so the price you charge actually accounts for your time and packaging — not only raw ingredients.
Worked example
A batch of 12 cupcakes costs €9.60 in ingredients, €12.00 in labour (1 hour at €12) and €3.60 in packaging — a total batch cost of €25.20. Cost per serving = €25.20 ÷ 12 = €2.10. At a 65% target margin, the recommended price is €2.10 ÷ (1 − 0.65) = €6.00 per cupcake, for a profit of €3.90 each.
Formula
Cost per serving = (Total ingredient cost + Labour + Packaging) ÷ Servings
Selling price (margin) = Cost per serving ÷ (1 − Target margin %)
Selling price (markup) = Cost per serving × (1 + Target markup %)
Good to know
It's easy to price a bake from ingredients alone and quietly work for free — labour and packaging are real costs even for a home-based or small bakery. Revisit this whenever an ingredient price changes noticeably, since flour, butter, sugar and dairy costs move often enough to erode a margin you set months ago.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to enter every single ingredient?+
No — enter as many rows as you have costs for. Ingredient names are optional labels; only the cost of each row is used in the calculation.
Should I include my own labour cost?+
It's optional but recommended — a recipe that looks profitable on ingredients alone can lose money once your time is costed in. Enter your time for the whole batch at an hourly rate you'd actually want to be paid.
What counts as "packaging / overhead"?+
Boxes, labels, ribbon, and a fair share of running costs like oven energy or rent for the time spent on this batch — anything beyond ingredients and labour that this batch genuinely costs you.
Margin or markup — which should I use?+
Margin is profit as a share of your selling price; markup is profit as a share of your cost. The same target percentage gives a different price depending on which you mean, so pick whichever one you actually have a target for.
